Preparing for Healthy Relationships

A three-part workshop series for single adults
Before choosing and building a lasting relationship, it helps to understand what we bring with us: our history, values, expectations, communication patterns, strengths, and areas for growth.
This research-informed workshop series is being developed for single adults aged 25–45 who want to prepare more intentionally for a healthy marriage or long-term relationship.
Through guided reflection, practical exercises, and conversation, participants will explore not only what they hope to find in a partner, but also what kind of partner they want to become.
Session 1
Know Yourself Before Choosing a Partner
Explore how family-of-origin experiences, personal values, and unexamined expectations may influence the relationships you pursue.
Participants will identify what they want to carry forward, what they may want to change, and one quality they would like to develop in themselves.
Session 2
Communicating Through Difference
Learn practical ways to listen attentively, express needs clearly, and respond to differences with curiosity rather than immediate judgment.
Participants will explore how assumptions and communication habits can shape disagreement and practise approaching difficult conversations with greater clarity and respect.
Session 3
Choosing and Building Commitment
Consider the qualities that support a healthy, lasting relationship, including compatibility, realistic expectations, commitment, and shared direction.
Participants will reflect on healthy and unhealthy relationship patterns and create a personal plan for approaching future relationships more intentionally.
About the Series
This three-part workshop series is now confirmed for single adults aged 25–45 looking to prepare for a healthy marriage or long-term relationship. Upcoming sessions will provide a supportive environment to explore intentional partnership through the lens of recent research.
Each workshop combines accessible relationship studies with personal reflection, practical activities, and opportunities for discussion. Participants will never be required to share private experiences with the group.

Meet Your Facilitator
I’m Alexander Scholtz, a student of Marriage and Family Studies at Brigham Young University–Idaho. I am developing this workshop series as part of my training in Family Life Education.
Through Work of Belonging, I want to make research about relationships and family life accessible, reflective, and practically useful—especially for single adults who want to prepare intentionally for a healthy marriage or long-term relationship.
I approach this work as an educator and fellow learner. These workshops offer education and guided reflection; they are not therapy or relationship counselling.
